Remembering Lilly
Famed fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer died on Sunday aged 81. Many of you will know of her style, bright coloured tropical print dresses and pants, which became popular in the 1960s and later, a preppy fashion classic still popular today.
Pulitzer became a designer by accident after opening a juice stand in 1959, using the fruit from her husbands orange grove. She kept spilling juice on her clothes and asked her seamstress to make dresses in colorful prints that would camouflage the juice stains. These dresses hung behind her juice stand and soon outsold her drinks!
Jacqueline Kennedy attended boarding school with Pulitzer and wore one of the shifts in a Life magazine spread. The signature clothing style features playful floral & jungle prints in pinks, light greens, blue, yellow and orange.
Pulitzer closed her original company in the mid-1980s after filing for bankruptcy. The label was revived about a decade later after being acquired by Sugartown Worldwide and Pulitzer was only marginally involved in the new business.
Lilly was known for hosting parties barefoot at her Palm Beach home, and also published two guides to entertaining.
“That’s what life is all about: Let’s have a party. Let’s have it tonight,” she once said.

On a Winning Streak!
Good morning on yet another gorgeous autumn day in the NSW Southern Highlands!
It’s been an exciting and extremely busy few months in our office, with a tradefair to exhibit at, containers of new product arriving, our Riess Kitchenware offered in a Temple & Webster online feature and a photo shoot in the Emporium & Market for a well known magazine (we’ll keep you posted on that one as news comes to hand!).
We were delighted to be awarded the Best Design Life Stand in Show 2013 Winner at the recent Home & Giving Fair. Many hours of hard work and meticulous planning go into each and every tradefair, so when the hard work is rewarded it’s a wonderful thing!
At our last few tradefairs, our ticket booth (or kissing booth as we like to call it) has been on display and always draws much attention and interest. We love this unique piece and now offer it for hire in displays, photo shoots etc. We had a customer do exactly this, as they were taking part in a shop window display competition as part of the recent Camden Show. We were delighted to learn they won ‘Champion Display’! Following is a photo of their display, isn’t it fabulous?
We hope you’re all enjoying this short week as much as we are – only 3 days to go until that lovely long long weekend rolls around. Remember Dirty Janes Emporium & Market are closed Good Friday but open 10am – 5pm for the rest of the Easter Weekend, why not hop on in for a visit!

F is for Friday & Framing!
My mother-in-law recently presented my husband with the cowboy suit he used to dress up in when he was a child, still in pristine condition (amazing considering it’s age!), though the fabric was perishing in a few spots. She had even kept the metal guns for the holsters! I decided to have it box framed so I could hang it in our little boys room. I was delighted with the result and love seeing it hanging above his bed with a photo nearby on his bedside table of daddy wearing it when he was a little boy.
Do you have something special tucked away in a cupboard or drawer out of sight that you could frame? Some treasured war medals, old family recipes, or baby clothes? I thought I’d share some photos that might inspire you to frame that something special, so you can hang it on a wall for all your friends and family to see, but most importantly, for you to enjoy everyday.
